A device for deterring theft of an article, comprising a fragile vial (14) containing a theft deterring substance; a vial (14) carrier structure (11) and a cover structure (12). The carrier structure (11) includes a weakened region allowing the vial (14) carrier to yield if a force is exerted on the attachment (13), thereby causing the vial (14) to break due to loads transferred via vial (14) engaging surfaces (24, 26). The connection between the carrier structure (11) and the cover structure (12) is formed by at least two distinct local connections (18) separated by a central area and located spaced away from the attachment (13) in opposite longitudinal directions of the vial (14). The proposed device is of a simple cost-effective and light construction while the vial reliably fractures if an unauthorized attempt is made to remove the device.
