PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which maintains a bookshelf structure, has a tilt angle and a liquid crystal temperature range both prevented from decreasing, and has a high-speed responsiveness. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition contains a naphthalene compound represented by formula 1 (wherein R11 and R12 are each an optionally halogenated 1-24C alkyl, 2-24C alkoxyalkyl or 3-24C alkenyl group, provided R11 and R12 may each have an optically active asymmetric carbon atom; Y11 is a single bond or -O-; Y12 is -CO-, -CH2 CH2 -, -OCH2 - or -CH2 O-; X11 and X12 are each H or a halogen; and n is 0 or 1) and an optically inactive pyrimidine compound represented by formula 2 (wherein m and m' are each an integer of 1-20; Y21 and Y22 are each a single bond or -O-; and X21 and X22 are each H or a halogen). A liquid crystal element using the composition is also provided.
