PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide antioxidants having a lipophilic cationic group and to provide uses of these antioxidants, e.g. pharmaceuticals. SOLUTION: This mitochondrially-targeted antioxidant compound comprises or includes a triphenylphonium cation linked by a 1-30C carbon chain to an antioxidant moiety represented by the formula (wherein m is an integer of 0-3 and Y is independently selected from an alkoxy, a thioalkyl, an alkyl, a haloalkyl, a halo, an amino, a nitro and optionally a substituted aryl).
