PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To resolve the problem that light passing one of adhesive areas for coupling birefringence areas is leaked to the other area to degrade optical characteristics in a conventional composite optical element constituted of a first birefringence area, a second birefringence area, and a fifth adhesive area for junction of these areas, which are provided on one face of a Farady rotator, and a third birefringence area, a fourth birefringence area, and a sixth adhesive area for junction for these areas, which are provided on the other, face in the case that optical fibers or optical waveguides are provided in both end faces of the composite optical element and light emitted from one optical fiber or optical waveguide passes as a parallel light or a convergent light so that the fifth and sixth adhesive areas may be in the center of the optical axis by one or more lenses. SOLUTION: The fifth and sixth adhesive areas are made of such materials that the refractive index after hardening of these adhesive areas may be lower than refractive indexes to ordinary and extraordinary rays of the first, second, third, and fourth birefringence materials, and thus light is totally reflected in the adhesive areas.
