PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine having a mechanism capable of avoiding a water hammer even if water is present in an air charge passage. SOLUTION: The air charge passage has a drain passage with a valve, and a valve opening/closing means for opening the valve to drain the air charge passage before air running and closing the valve during air running. The engine is started after starting air running. The air charge passage internally has a water detecting sensor, and upon detecting water, air running is started after the air charge passage is drained.
