PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stabilizing sol obtained by hydrolysis- condensation reaction of titanium alkoxide, and for depositing a dense titanium oxide thin film, and to provide a method for producing an organic-inorganic composite gradient material consisting of a titanium oxide thin film having a dense surface. SOLUTION: Titanium tetraalkoxide having 1 to 4C alkoxy groups is subjected to hydrolysis-condensation by using alcohols containing >=3C ether- based oxygen and water to prepare a titania sol solution having a light scattering intensity of 8,000 to 300,000 cps(count per second), and, after that, a film is deposited. Next, the humidification treatment and heating treatment are further performed under specified conditions to produce the titanium oxide thin film. Further, a coating film is formed on an organic base material by using a coating solution containing an organic polymer compound having a hydrolysable metal-containing group and the above titania sol. Humidification treatment and heating treatment are performed under specified conditions to produce the organic-inorganic composite gradient material.
