PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make automatic press possible in forming a workpiece even if the workpiece has a closed space over a long range by enabling the superposed part to be joined through pressurization with a press apparatus. SOLUTION: In forming a hollow workpiece, both ends of bent planar blanks are superposed to make a tubular workpiece 70 having an internal space. With this workpiece set on a fixed die (lower die 10), forming dies 40 are positioned so that a prescribed part in the superposed area of both ends is supported from inside the space. Then, a movable die (upper die 50) is moved to press the superposed part from the outside at a position corresponding to the dies 40 by means of a punch 56 provided in the movable die, thereby joining the superposed part by squeezing it with this punch 56 and the dies 40.
