PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method and a coating apparatus capable of manufacturing a planographic printing plate having a multilayered plate making layer without damaging the sand dressing surface of a lower layer or support web. SOLUTION: In the coating method and the coating apparatus, a coating solution is bonded to a continuously running strip-like article to be coated by a coating solution bonding means and a metering rod having a smooth surface adjacent on the downstream side of the coating solution bonding means with respect to the running direction of the article to be coated is used to float the article to be coated from the metering rod to meter the coating solution so that the coating solution bonded to the article to be coated becomes a predetermined coating amount.
