Unsaturated nitriles e.g. acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile, are prepared by reacting olefines with oxygen and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst comprising the oxides of molybdenum and phosphorus and one or more oxides of the elements chromium, manganese, iron and nickel, at a temperature between 300 and 465 DEG C. and a pressure within the range 0.3 to 10 atmospheres (absolute). The catalyst may be represented as the composition MeaMobPc in which a is 1 to 20, b 1 to 10, and c 1 to 3, and Me stands for one or more of metals chromium, manganese, iron and nickel, and may be used deposited on a carrier such as silicic acid, pulverised pumice, smelter-slag, kieselguhr, alumina or mixtures thereof, and the oxygen may be in a gas such as air, with optionally an inert diluent such as steam, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or a saturated hydrocarbon. A flow bed or fluidised bed reactor may be used and two forms of apparatus are described (Division B1). Specification 947,364 is referred to. |
