Transition metal complexes (I) and (II) with a 2-alkoxybenzylidene ligand and a hydrogenated imidazol-2-yl ligand are new. Complexes of formula (I) and (II) are new. M = a sub-group VIII transition metal; X<1>, X<2> = anionic ligands; R<1>-R<4> = H (not all) or 1-50C alkyl (cyclic, linear or branched) or 6-30C aryl (both optionally substituted with alkyl or a functional group) and R<1> and/or R<4> may also be halogen, 1-4C alkoxy or alkoxycarbonyl, 6-10C aryloxy or aryloxycarbonyl, cyano or 1-10C acyloxy, and/or R<1> and R<2> or R<2> and R<3> or R<3> and R<4> or R<4> and R<5> may form part of a 3-20C cyclic system (not including the carbon atoms in (I) or (II) in which H may be replaced by alkyl or functional group(s) and/or at least one ring carbon may be replaced by S, P, O or N; R<5> = H, 1-20C alkyl or 6-20C aryl (optionally substituted as above); R<6>, R<7> = 1-30C alkyl (cyclic, linear or branched) or 6-20C aryl (optionally substituted as above). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for the preparation of (I) and (II); (2) new compounds of formula (VII); (3) a method for the preparation of (VII).
