The present invention relates to monitoring apparatus, particularly apparatus for monitoring a bathing person. Young bathers or weak swimmers are more likely to get into difficulty and drown whilst swimming. This problem is prevented using apparatus comprising a transmitter device (1) to be worn by the bather and a receiver device (2) for alerting a person remote from the bather, characterised by the transmitter device (1) comprising means (7) for detecting a variation in the behaviour or the physiological state of the bather indicative of danger of drowning and for emitting a signal (8) in response to such variation, said detecting means (7) and emitting means (8) being included in an electrical circuit which can be completed only when the transmitter device (1) is fully or partially immersed in water and receiver device (2) comprising an alarm (16, 17, 21) which is actuated in response to reception of said signal.
