A shoe cleat connector (11) for use with a receptacle attached to a shoe includes a substratum (15) having a plurality of indepen dent posts (13) extending therefrom, with a retaining member (20) disposed at a distal end a nd extending radially from each post. The receptacle (84) includes a cavity wit h cantilevered fingers disposed near the periphery of the cavity. Each retaini ng member (20) of the cleat connector includes a periphery contoured ser ies of adjacent planar surfaces (45) that successively engage a corresponding cantilevered finger (74) when the retaining members (20) are inserted and rotated within the receptacle cavity (84), which results in the cleat connector (11) being secured within the receptacle.
