A bobbin yarn 1 is inspected by a high-definition television -camera 3 and the resulting video output fed to at least one circuit capable of detecting electrically any off standard condition or conditions that can be detected visually, the output of said circuits being used to control segregating or indicating mechanisms. The type of illumination used is determined by the conditions to be investigated, for example, dark ground illumination by light 5 may be used to illuminate any profile projecting faults 9, whilst frontal illumination by light 11, via apertured mirror 15, produces a lustre line along the axis of the bobbin and is used for the investigation of the distribution of the windings thereon. Side illumination may be used or the thread may be treated with a fluorescent substance and illuminated by ultra-violet light. The electrical circuits may be of the pulse discriminator type, the voltage comparator type or a coincidence circuit, reference signals being fed to one side thereof. A time delay circuit may be used to prevent operation of the segregating or indicating mechanisms until after a given signal from the bobbin is detected at least twice.
