A dialkyl aluminium chloride or bromide is reacted with potassium chloride or bromide, the resulting complex broken by heating under vacuum to give a distillate comprising a trialkyl aluminium and dialkyl aluminium chloride or bromide, adding potassium chloride or bromide to the distillate and separating the resultant upper layer of trialkyl aluminium from the lower layer of potassium chloride or bromide complex. The compound present in the lower layer may be re-cycled, or it may be reacted with aluminium trichloride or tribromide to give monoalkyl aluminium dichloride or dibromide. The residue from the first distillation may be extracted with for example, an aromatic or halogenated hydrocarbon to remove any potassium alkyl aluminium trihalide. The process is particularly applicable to those complexes containing both chlorine and bromine. Specifications 770,707, 833,646 and 864,393 are referred to. |
