[Also in Division B6] Apparatus for feeding a pile of books (or a single book) to a trimming machine, comprises an endless belt conveyer 2, gates 41 and 42 for passing one pile at a time to a second endless belt conveyer 6, a reciprocating piston 8 for moving the pile up to a side stop 11, and pivoted arms 9 which are swung downwardly to register the pile against a back stop 10, said arms being returned to their initial raised position prior to the back stop being operated to feed the pile beneath the arms and into the machine. The conveyers 2 and 6 are separated by a plate 5 of relatively frictionless material. The piles of books are pushed across the plate 5 by the succeeding piles of the conveyer 2. A clamp 3 is positioned above the plate 5 and is interconnected with the gates, so that when the gates are opened to allow the leading pile to move with the conveyer 6, the clamp is closed to grip the second pile of books and prevent it from moving. Each pile is fed in turn up to a front stop. The latter includes a switch 7 controlling the operation of the piston 8. The piston 8 and arms 9 have brush heads, or carry spring-loaded bars or plungers, respectively. The gates 41 and 42 are pivoted at 43 and interconnected by a bar 44 actuated by a pneumatic piston 48. |
