PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shredder which can shred cards made of plastic materials, an optical disk or the like, which does not particularly need to increase a member, etc., or does not need to use a specially specified cutter, and the manufacturing cost of which is suppressed to the minimum. SOLUTION: The shredder comprises a shredding means having two knives 52 and 54 installed in a housing 42 and through a shredding gap 48, a first trigger means 50, and a second trigger means 56. The first trigger means 50 is installed at an almost central position in a horizontal direction above the shredding gap 48. When a treating object with a width longer than half the horizontal length of the shredding gap 48 is inserted, the treating object triggers the first trigger means 50 to activate the shredding means. When a treating object with a width shorter than half the horizontal length of the shredding gap 48 is inserted, the treating object contacts and trigger the second trigger means 56 without contacting the first trigger means 50 to activate the shredding means.
