Preparing a soil conditioner comprises supplying air into a sealed space containing a mixture of undecomposed plant- or animal-originating organic matter and peat (70% moisture) so that the temperature rises to 70-75[deg]C, maintaining the air supply to keep the temperature over 70[deg]C for 24 hours, then reducing the pressure by 100-500Pa and suppling air until the moisture content than 50%. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for carrying out the method.
