PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 5-halogenated 3H-pyrollo[2,3-b]pyridine that is useful as an intermediate for fluorescent dyes, and a method of efficiently producing the same. SOLUTION: The 3H-pyrollo[2,3-b]pyridine represented by general formula (I) (wherein V<1> and V<2> are independent from each other and mean H or a monovalent substituent; X is a halogen atom; A is a hetero atom or a carbon atom which may be substituted; Y is H or a monovalent substituent) is produced by reacting a halogenation reagent with 3H-pyrollo[2,3-b]pyridine represented by general formula (II) [wherein V<1> , V<2> , A and Y have the same meanings as in the general formula (I)].
