In an optical data carrier comprising a substrate carrying on its surface an information layer which can be written upon and read with blue, red or infrared light and contains a light absorbing compound (I) and optionally a binder, (I) consists of cyanine dye(s). Some of the dyes (I) (e.g. 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives) are new compounds. In an optical data carrier comprising a (preferably transparent) substrate (optionally precoated with reflection layer(s)) carrying on its surface an information layer and optionally reflection layer(s) and/or a protective layer, another substrate or a covering layer, where the information layer can be written upon and read with blue, red or infrared (preferably laser) light and contains a light absorbing compound (I) and optionally a binder, (I) consists of at least one cyanine dye. Independent claims are included for: (i) optical data carriers as above, which have been written upon with blue or red (preferably laser) light; (ii) the production of optical data carriers as above, by coating the optionally precoated substrate with (I) (optionally together with binders, additives and/or solvents) and applying the further optional layers if required; (iii) the use of (I), having an absorption lambda max1 in the 340-410 nm region or lambda max2 in the 420-650 nm region, in the information layer of a ROM optical data carrier; (iv) the use of (I) in the information layer of a ROM optical data carrier which can be written upon and read with blue or red laser light; and (v) new cyanine dyes of formula (IA) or (IB).
