PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator of excellent efficiency and high performance by which both brightness, high picture quality and high performance of a projection type video display device can be attained. SOLUTION: An illumination optical system by which light can be efficiently made incident on a video display element can be realized by making outermost peripheral lens cell size larger than inside lens size of a lens array.
