PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface illuminator capable of reducing the whole thickness (thickness including the thickness of the surface illuminator and a liquid crystal display device) of a device and also capable of displaying a natural liquid crystal image. SOLUTION: In this device, the peripheral part 30 of a transparent substrate 2 is provided by being inserted into the groove 31 of a frame 7 and light source part 5 (a light transmission body 3 and a point light source 4) which is provided at one side face of the transparent substrate 2 is provided in the frame 7. The whole width m2 of the frame 7 is formed to be width satisfying the relation of n2<(m2-r2-r3). As a result, the upper part of a liquid crystal display device L is provided by being inserted into the notched part of the frame 7 roughly by an amount equal to the thickness p1 of the frame 7 and the gap between the back of the substrate 2 and the surface of the liquid crystal display L is reduced. Moreover, the whole thickness of the device becomes roughly a thickness in which the thickness of the device L and the thickness of the substrate 2 are added and becomes thinner than the thickness by the conventional constitution in which the frame 7 is arranged by being overlapped on the upper side of the device L roughly by the amount equivalent to the thickness p1 of the frame. |
