The trimming machine has at least one side area in which at least one tool is arranged to move in translation out from its operating position as part of a unit which is capable of functioning independently of the machine so that at the end of the adjusting movement it can be moved in translation in a direction which includes an angle to the adjusting direction so that a further interchangeable unit can be brought into the stand-by position. The machine has a symmetrical design either side of a line running coaxial with the centre line of the strip (1) being aligned so that two functional units with finishing tools can be set symmetrical with the centre symmetry line.
