A system for edge grinding of glass sheets, with a minimum of floor space, has the sheets held and moved in a near upright position along a support frame. Two grinding heads are mounted on vertical guides. The grinding process is as follows; one grinding head moves up the guide grinding one vertical edge of the sheet. The sheet is then moved between the upper and lower grinding heads grinding the upper and lower edges, while the panel is held by suction grips. The lower grinding head then moves up the rear upright edge of the sheet to finish the grinding process. The next sheet is processed by one grinding head moving down the leading edge of the sheet, followed by the sheet being moved between the heads and finishing with the upper grinding head moving down the rear edge of the sheet, The two grinding sequences are repeated for a flow line production process.
