An apparatus and method for determining the onset and presence of sepsis fro m the liquid portion of the blood of a mammalian subject utilizing an assay. T he assay includes a chemical detector for determining the presence of iNOS in t he liquid portion of the blood of the mammalian subject, without detecting eNOS or nNOS.
