PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a moving quantity detector capable of also using the display of a reference position as a slit row showing moving quantity. SOLUTION: The moving quantity detector generates signals of one or more phases at every unit moving quantity in the moving motion of the moving matter, and detects the moving quantity of the moving matter on the basis of the signal group. When the moving matter is present at the reference position, the signal level of an arbitrary phase among the signals is set to a state different from the signal level, in such a case that the moving matter is in a state other than the reference position.
