The data entry device especially designed for computers consists of two joysticks or control handles (2) that are equipped with keys so that they combine the functions of a keyboard and a mouse. The main keys (3c) contain the alphabet (5a). Using special shift keys (3b, 5u) that are operated by the thumb, their assignment is switched to numbers (5b), special characters (5c, d), text cursor functions (5e), or control functions. Other assignments can be programmed and activated with the system key. The displacement of the control handles (2) moves the mouse cursor or triggers control functions (6a, b, c), such as Enter/Escape or PageUp/PageDown. These mouse cursor or text cursor functions can be activated or deactivated with the push of a button (3a, b). The handle parts (2a) of the control handle units (1) can be adjusted in size and position (FIGS. 5 and 6) and can be located at the end of arm rests (4d). The data entry device according to the invention thus abandons the conventional approach of positioning key elements on a plane. The design respects the natural, relaxed position of the hand so that a pronation movement of the hand to press key elements is completely done away with.
