PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical connector and its connector plug for forming an electrical and/or optical display showing a state of the connector relative to an adaptor. SOLUTION: An optical fiber connector plug to be inserted into an adaptor has, on a latch arm, an electrically conductive member for forming a latch shoulder which is engaged with a latch stop on the end of a latch rib inside the adaptor and which activates a sensor mechanism such as spaced electric contacts inside the adaptor. The lead wires from each of the contacts are connected to a central processing unit that detects the formation of connection and that sends to the switch a signal for turning on laser or other light source. Consequently, no laser power is turned on until the connector plug is completely positioned inside the adaptor. In removing the plug, the latch arm needs to be pressed down, thereby breaking the circuit and turning the laser of prior to the removal of the connector plug.
