A telephone apparatus having a video telephone function capable of connecting the line with a communication mate by a simple operation.In the telephone apparatus having the video telephone function capable of transmitting video information together with audio information to a communication mate,a line connection is performed for calling a video telephone(step 404),check is made whether the line connection is complete(step 405),and when the line connection has failed,a line connection for audio communication is automatically performed(step 410).Thus,when a telephone apparatus of a communication mate does not have a video telephone function,audio communication can be performed without performing calling for the audio communication separately.
