PURPOSE: A mechanism for setting the compatibility of printer components with a printer and an ink jet printer are provided to supply a key that is economically and easily produced with permitting a common cartridge base to be used for a plurality of printer compositions. CONSTITUTION: A separable key element is operatively fixed to printer component installing parts(50,52) for receiving taps(220a¯220f) from printer components(24a,24b) to be put therein. The key element indicates a desired characteristic of the printer component, thereby allowing only compatible printer components to be installed onto the printer component base. The key element is conformably engaged with the printer component base in a unique configuration to make only the compatible key elements be fixed to the printer component base. Moreover, the key element includes a display surface for visually identifying the required characteristic of the printer component. The printer component is a detachable ink reservoir and the printer component base is fixed to a carriage(30) of an inkjet printer, thereby providing an on-axis ink reservoir.
