PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an activated carbon having a wide specific surface area and a method for manufacturing it from used tires as raw materials using less amount of KOH in a short heating time. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing activated carbon, used tires are pulverized and steels are removed to form chips of 3 to 5 mm square, and then the chip is dipped in 0.5 to 1 M potassium carbonate solution and stirred for 5 to 10 minutes. Thereafter, 4.5 g of the chip and 12 g of potassium hydroxide are mixed to make a sample, and the sample is placed on a boat, the boat is put into a tube, heated from room temperature to 920 deg.C in a short time (for about 40 minutes) in an electric furnace while introducing nitrogen gas, and held at 920 deg.C for 75 minutes. After heating, the sample is spontaneously cooled and taken out, fully washed with 500 cc of boiling water and boiled in 5 to 10% hydrochloric acid solution for 5 minutes, washed with hot water, filtered and dried at 110 deg.C for 2 hours to obtain the activated carbon having 1000 m<2> /g or more of specific surface area. |
