PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which the formation rate of the sludge in fresh oil can be determined by a test extending for about several weeks. SOLUTION: In the decision method for the formation rate of sludge in a lubricating oil, the oxidation degradation test of the lubricating oil is made, a degraded oil is generated, the weight (A) of the filtered residue of the degraded oil is found, one or both (B) from among a change in the distribution of the molecular weight of an antioxidant contained in the degraded oil and an RBOT remaining rate obtained by an RBOT test prescribed by JIS K2514 of the degraded oil are found, and the formation rate of sludge of the lubricating oil is determined on the basis of the relationship between (A) and (B) in the above.
