PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To establish a technology for improving machinability after cold working, particularly a swarf treatment property, particularly aimed at a steel to be machined after cold working. SOLUTION: A steel material superior in the swarf treatment property after cold working includes 0.001-0.01% B, (% means mass% hereafter) and 0.002-0.01% N, and 10 or more particles of BN with diameters of 1μm or more, per visual field of 0.5 mm×0.5 mm in a cross section of the steel.
