The procedure consists of introducing recycled exhaust gases into each cylinder of the engine during the first part of the inlet phase, followed by fresh air in the second part of the inlet phase, and then delivering an amount of fuel which is in a stoichiometric relationship to the volume of fresh air. The quantity of recycled exhaust gas fed into each cylinder during the first part of the phase is equivalent to 50 - 70 per cent of the cylinder's volume and has virtually no fresh air mixed with it. The recycled gases are delivered through a branch duct (24) connected to the cylinder's outlet duct (20) and fitted with a shutter (26) which directs the gases from one cylinder to another or to the exhaust duct (22). |
