PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communication unit for communication between a vehicle and roadside apparatus, which is downsized and can be embedded in a specified position of a vehicle. SOLUTION: An optical communication unit 4 for communication with optical beacons is embedded in an instrument panel 2 in a vehicle. The optical communication unit 4 comprises a main body case 6 with a printed wiring circuit board 8 and a cover 7 attached thereon. A photo diode(PD) 15 and a light-emitting diode(LED) 16 are mounted on the printed wiring circuit board 8. A lens 20 is integrally formed on the cover 7 through which optical signals are transmitted and received between the optical communication unit and the optical beacons. As the optical signals transmitted between the optical communication unit and the optical beacons are concentrated through the lens portions 20, the optical communication is performed efficiently. Accordingly, by forming the lens 20 integrally on the cover 7, the optical communication unit 4 can be downsized. |
