The procedure consists of making a small hole (1) through the adductor muscle (2) of a bivalve, especially an oyster, for inserting an implant (3) with a crosspiece (4) on one end and a holder (5) on the other. The implant and crosspiece are made from metal wire; the crosspiece can be aligned with the implant for insertion, and the holder can be a plastic plate with publicity material or information printed on it. The hole can be made directly by the crosspiece and implant, e.g. by an automated process, and the implant is inserted through the muscle so that the crosspiece is located inside the shell and the holder outside, allowing the adductor muscle to be severed to open the shell by pulling on the holder. Prior to severing the adductor muscle it can be relaxed by steeping the bivalve in reconstituted sea water with extra magnesium, or placing it in a dry ventilated atmosphere. |
