A piston compressor has a compression chamber whose limit is defines by a valve plate with a pressure passage (32) and valve linking the cylinder above the piston to a chamber holding compressed gas. The valve is closed by pressure against a valve seat which rests upon a valve seat base. The valve seat base (22) is inserted within and sealed against the pressure passage (32).
