PURPOSE: A video playing/recording system having a background picture/sound varying function and a method of changing a background picture/sound are provided to allow a user to change the background picture/sound into another picture/sound through various interfaces. CONSTITUTION: In a background picture change mode(320), a data source path through which a background picture will be received is selected(330). Video and/or audio data items received through the selected data source path are stored(340), and then at least one of the stored video and/or audio data items is selected to be designated as a background picture or sound(350). The designated background video and/or audio data is output whenever a video playing/recording system is stopped(360). In a background picture deletion mode(370), at least one of the stored background video and/or audio data is selected and deleted(380,390).
