Apparatus for guiding equipment between a base positioned above water and an underwater installation having a vertical tubular member comprises a guide cable having an upper end secured to the base and a lower portion extending downwardly into the tubular member in sliding engagement therewith. The invention may be employed for lowering equipment to underwater storage or manifolding facilities having vertical tubular piles. As shown the invention is applied to an underwater wellhead 20, the cable 51 extending from a vessel 11 and having a weight 54 slidable within the casing 52 of the wellhead. The weight has passages 57, 58 with relief valves 59, 60 to permit entry into the casing. The weight is attached to the cable and lowered into the wellhead through a marine conductor 28. After the conductor and drilling equipment 25, 26, 27, 30 have been raised over the cable production equipment 61, . . . 70 attached to a running string 71 is lowered to the wellhead. A length of cable which extends for 1000 feet or more into the well may replace the weight. |
