PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low unit cost mechanical pencil, in which waste of a lead can be eliminated by making a non-writable remaining lead as extremely short as possible and which has a favorable handleability. SOLUTION: In the mechanical pencil, in which a lead is held through the back and forth motion of a chuck arranged ahead a barrel and, at the same time, delivered, a holding chuck is provided toward the near front part of the inner hole part of a slider, the tip part of which is insertingly inserted so as to project beyond the front end of a mouth tip part in the inner hole of the mouth tip part provided at the front end of a barrel and, in addition, the outer peripheral part of the slider is engaged with the inner peripheral part of the mouth tip part so as to advance to and retreat from each other at the predetermined interval under the condition that the lead holding force of the holding chuck is set to be so stronger than the engaging force of the slider that, during the period of the chuck ranging from its most advanced state to its retreating to its starting position of the grasping of the lead, at least the slider engages under its nearly standing-still state at the most advance state of the mouth tip part.
