A comestible comprising 0.65-1.3 g/400 kcal of calcium, 0.5-1.2 g/400 kcal of phosphorus, from 0.04 g/400 kcal of magnesium, from 0.5 g/400 kcal of potassium and from 0.6 to1.2 g/400 kcal of sodium is used in preventing the initial occurrence of calcium oxalate urolithiasis in a canine animal. The comestible can be prepared by the mixing the ingredients together, with optional cooking, with any raw food ingredients and making into a form suitable for consumption or administration to a canine animal.
