The retractable road barrier has a plate (2) forming a barrier post and hinged to a casing (1) which is embedded in the road surface. The plate is moved by a sealed electro-mechanical drive, with a bidirectional solenoid (5) and a rack-gear group (3,4). The drive has a return spring (8) for opening and a lock to hold the plate retracted. The barrier can be controlled locally or remotely.
