PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, when a coupling defect occurs between a free magnetic layer and a ferromagnetic layer in the conventional magnetic sensor element, the portion becomes to have sensitivity and the reproduction characteristic of the element is lowered in such a way that the element generates noise, and so on. SOLUTION: Hard bias layers 19 are formed on both sides of the free magnetic layer 15 in the track width direction and supply vertical bias magnetic fields to the magnetic layer 15. Consequently, the magnetization of the both side areas 15a of the magnetic layer 15 can be fixed appropriately by the synergistic effect between an exchange coupling magnetic field based on the RKKY interaction to the ferromagnetic layer 17 and the vertical bias magnetic fields from the magnetic layer 15. Consequently, even when the coupling defect, etc., occurs in this potion, the portion does not have sensitivity and can maintain a stable magnetized state as compared with the conventional example.
