An elevator device wherein a hoist (4) is installed adjacent the top (3) of a shaft (1) in such a manner that it does not interfere with a car (7) in regions closer to the lateral surfaces and back surface in the shaft (1) as seen from above. This allows the elevator device, even if the car (7) and a balance weight (8) are disposed in the direction of the innermost, to have relatively few parts, to require a low cost and a small installation space, to suffer less failure due to flood damage, and to have a sufficient load distribution to minimize the deformation of car guide rails (9).
