17a -Methyl -D 1,4- ondrostadien -17b - ol -3- one is prepared by dehydrogenating 17a -methyl -D 4- ondrosten -17b - ol -3- one with 2,3-dichloro-5, 6-dicyano-1, 4-benzoquinone in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a strong organic acid having a dissociation constant between 5x10-3 and 2x10-1, for example, 3,5-dinitrobenzoic, maleic, trichloroacetic and oxalic acids.
