PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive polarizing separation element having a polarizing separation function in a wide range with a simple film structure and a small number of layers and to provide a polarizing beam splitter by using the above element. SOLUTION: The polarizing separation element 2 has repeated structures (LHL)<m> containing a basic structure LHL consisting of an optically transparent high refractive index layer H having a specified refractive index with respect to incident light OI, and an optically transparent first low refractive index layer L and a second low refractive index layer L disposed to interpose the high refractive index layer H, wherein m is an integer of >=2 and preferably 3 to 7. The beam splitter has the above polarizing separation element 2 and transparent substrates 3 formed in contact with the entrance face 2a and the exiting face 2b of the element 2 to interpose the element 2.
