PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a apparatus and a method by which a slit is stably cleaned before the start of coating and is stably cleaned in a short time even if failure occurs on the way of the coating. SOLUTION: The automatic cleaning apparatus for a coater for applying a coating liquid on a traveling web by discharging the coating liquid from >=1 slits to the web has a moving means for carrying out the movement of a position relative to the coater in the three-dimensional direction, a cleaning means held by the moving means and an inserting guide means capable of moving parallel in the width direction of the coater to insert a cleaning member held by the cleaning means into the slit.
