<p>FIELD: motor fuels. SUBSTANCE: preparation of additive used for cleaning motor fuel consists in oxyalkylenation of mixture, containing 94.5-99.9% alkylphenols of general formula I , where R1 represents alkyl group with 6-16 carbon atoms, no more than 0.1% water, and no more than 5.0, preferably 0.1-1.0%, C1-C4-alkanols, by the aid of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide in presence of basic catalyst at 80- 170 C to give oxyalkylenated alcohol with molecular weight at least 100 and hydroxyl number at most 150 mg KOH/g. Resulting product is then brought into contact with acidic ion-exchange resin in H form, preferably containing sulfonic groups and containing at least 0.1 mole water per 1 mole functional groups, at temperature not superior to 150 C.
