The ignition system comprises e.g. cylinders, (11, 12) of fuel and oxidant gases, a housing (6) containing at least one catalyst (7) and having its outlet (9) connected by at least one hot gas duct (10) to the motor, and a selective gas feed assembly between the fuel cylinder and catalyst. Preferred Features: The fuel gas used in the system is hydrogen or an inferior alkyl, and the oxidant gas is oxygen. The catalyst contains platinum and is designed to create a combustion, ejecting hot gases at a temperature above 900K to ignite the motor ergols.
