PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solving method which maintain excellent picture quality while removing false contour artifact without any movement compensator. SOLUTION: In a basic idea, a new code for subfield coding is generated which obtain (p) gray levels (typically, p=256) from 2<n> different subfield arrangements to select (m) gray levels (m<p). Specific gray levels corresponding to specific subfield arrangement and subfield code words are so selected that subfield code words of similar gray levels have subfield arrangement to decrease false contour artifacts. An important rule of selecting how close code is selected from a combination of effective subfield code words is to select only video levels having an allocated subfield code word that the temporal center of gravity of light emission monotonously increases.
