New polyguanidine derivatives are claimed, and used in cosmetic compositions for the protection and/or care of keratinic matter. New polyguanidine derivatives are of formula (I). X, R1, R2, R3 = H, hydroxyl, 1-16C alkyl; Y = NHR; R = H, hydroxyl, 1-16C alkyl; A = 1-16C alkylene optionally substituted by hydroxyl or carboxyl or carboxylate or halogen and optionally containing one or more of amine or ether or thioether or ester or amide or carbamate or urea or 6C aryl or 3-8C optionally 1-8C alkyl or hydroxyl or halogen substituted cyclic functional groups, one or more 6-7C aryl or 5-7C cyclic group optionally substituted by 1-8C alkyl or hydroxyl or halogen, 10-14C polyarylic or 6-10C polycyclic chain optionally interrupted by 1-8C alkylene or amine or amide or ether or thioether or H or carbamate or urea; n = 2-5000. Independent claims are included for: (1) use of the polyguanidine derivatives (I) in a cosmetic composition for the protection and/or care of keratinic fibers; and (2) the preparation of the polyguanidines by heating an equimolar mixture of an alkylenediamine and a guanidine salt at 120-150degreesC for 4-10 hours.
